화웨이가 다음 달 접히는 스마트폰(폴더블폰) ‘메이트X’를 세계시장에 출시하겠다고 밝혔다.

리처드 위 화웨이 소비자부문 최고경영자(CEO)는 8일(현지시각) 독일 베를린 국제가전박람회(IFA)에서 언론브리핑을 열어 메이트X의 10월 출시 계획을 발표했다. 메이트X는 지난 2월 스페인 바르셀로나에서 열린 모바일 전시회 ‘엠더블유시(MWC) 2019’에서 공개됐고 올 여름 출시될 예정이었다. 그러나 삼성전자 갤럭시폴드가 지난 4월 결함 논란이 불거져 출시 일정이 연기됐고 화웨이도 일정을 미룬 바 있다. 다만 화웨이는 이파에 마련한 부스에 메이트X를 전시하지는 않았다.

위 최고경영자는 6일 발표한 첫 5G 통합칩 ‘기린 990’를 메이트X에 탑재하겠다고 말했다. 기린 990은 7나노 극자외선(EUV) 공정을 적용한 세계 첫 5G 통합칩이다. 삼성전자, 퀄컴의 5G 통합칩이 아직 양산 단계에 들어가지 못했지만, 화웨이는 이 칩을 이달 19일 독일 뮌헨에서 발표하는 메이트30에 탑재한다고 밝혔다.

중국 가전 제조사 티시엘(TCL)은 폴더블 폰을 이파에서 제한적으로 선보였다. 안·밖으로 접는 스마트폰 2종과 안으로 접는 스마트폰 1종을 전시했지만 아직 출시되지 않은데다 관람객들이 만지지 못하게 유리관 안에 전시했다. 삼성전자는 지난 2월 엠더블유시에서 유리관에 전시했던 갤럭시폴드의 개선된 버전을 처음 공개했다. 6일 국내 출시를 시작으로 18일 독일, 영국, 프랑스, 싱가포르에서 제품을 출시한다고 밝혔다. 미국에는 이달 말 출시될 예정이다.
