On Dec. 11, the Japanese newspaper Sankei Shimbun reported that rice straw and other waste contaminated by nuclear radiation spilled over into residential areas and nearby forests during Typhoon Hagibis. The paper reported that when the typhoon hit the city of Osaki in Miyagi Prefecture, flooded at a neighboring stream caused sacks of contaminated rice straw spilled over into other areas. Sacks in Iwate Prefecture also reportedly spilled out of their containment area. Government authorities, however, have continued to claim that all contaminated waste was properly contained or recovered.
